It's hard to imagine any red-blooded American male under the age of thirty not hating Chris Carraba intensely. The problem isn't his emo pin-up looks. It isn't the amount of play he gets. It isn't even that he projects zero gender solidarity. (On "Hands Down" he ducks "all the stupid questions" the boys ask, like "'Hey did you get some?'/ Man that is so dumb.") No, the problem is that the more notches he adds in his bedpost, the more forlornly he wails about never finding true love. Sure, crying over a broken heart is a pop stand-by, but when it comes to toughness, Justin Timberlake is DMX by comparison, Clay Aiken is The Rock. Uh, dude, maybe the girls don't stick around because you whine so damn much.

Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your perspective), Carraba can back up his plaints with a decent hook, as "Screaming Infidelities" demonstrated. This time out the aforementioned "Hands Down," breathlessly updated from a previous acoustic version, is the winner, with Carraba declaiming "My hopes are so high that your kiss might kill me/ So won't you kill me/ So I'll die happy?" Elsewhere he plights so many eternal troths it's a genuine relief when he turns bitter and sings, "Now that I can see you, I don't think you deserve a second glance." May red-blooded American females continue to use his hot young bod for meaningless sex until he decides to lock himself in a monastery. But remember ladies-a high maintenance boyfriend may seem sexy on the radio, but in real life he's a bona drag. And any woman who sticks around for breakfast gets what she deserves.
