New This Week At The Shop

A new record from North Carolina's HISS GOLDEN MESSENGER is always a reason to jump for joy, and this one's even called 'Jump For Joy', just to drive a point home. After a week spent hearing about so-called authentic voice-of-the-people's springing up in the Piedmont, it's nice to hear from a real one; songwriter and singer M.C. Taylor brings empathetic warmth and infectious energy on every track here. Voice of the shirtless BUCK MEEK lays a solo album on us as well this week, taking leave of his fellow Big Thief's in favor of his old Texas band on 'Haunted Mountain' in on green vinyl, and we've got a long overdue repress of 'A-Sides and Besides', the compilation of ADRIANNE LENKER and Buck's solo EPs from before they formed the band in 2015. Whoa, how long was I asleep? Its been a decade since KURT VILE's 'Wakin On A Pretty Daze' came out, and now we have a fresh anniversary edition of the Philadelphian's most swooning affair, in on yellow wax.
New York soul throwback KENDRA MORRIS is back with her most personal work yet, 'I Am What I'm Waiting For', on blue/white swirl vinyl, and we get a deftly tossed dart of a new record from new wave godmother CINDY WILSON of the B-52's called 'Realms', released by who else but Kill Rock Stars. SUKI WATERHOUSE's smoldering pop gem 'I Can't Let Go' is back in print, and we've got a fresh clear vinyl pressing of 'The Collection', which brings you all the hits from ALANIS MORISSETTE. We get asked for the Canadian firebrand's music all the time, so hopefully there's takers now that this one's in stock, otherwise it would be quite ironic.
Few tragedies have had such a galvanizing effect on a music community like that of JAIMIE BRANCH's death, which happened a year ago Wednesday. The trumpeter and bandleader had made an immense mark on the jazz world and beyond during her short time on earth, collaborating with musicians numbering in the hundreds, many of whom would have taken a bullet for her, based on the voluminous outpouring of feelings that came after the stunned silence of her passing. 'Fly Or Die Fly Or Die Fly Or Die (World War)' is her final album, and it is a fittingly emotional, eclectic journey, perfectly capturing her unique approach to both instrument and song. Indian composer SARATHY KORWAR takes a similarly uncompromising and personal approach to his form of jazz, best exemplified on 2016 album 'Day to Day', which gets a limited reissue this week on orange marble wax. NINA SIMONE's 1966 album 'Wild Is The Wind' is widely considered the peak experience of her mid-60s prime, and it gets a Verve/Acoustic Sounds edition this week. Numero revisits the indescribably funky soul from the Minneapolis group MIND & MATTER. A couple songs from '1514 Oliver Avenue (Basement)' turned up on the legendary Purple Snow compilation but you've gotta hear the rest!
Independent country heroes TURNPIKE TROUBADOURS reconnect for their first album in close to six years, 'A Cat In the Rain', in the shop on tan wax. Rapidly emerging Americana phenomenona ZACH BRYAN hits again with 'Summertime Blues', bringing back the old school approach of using a live concert photo on a studio album. Grammy-winning Nashville folk institution OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW turns 25 with 'Jubilee', featuring cameos from Mavis Staples and Sierra Ferrell. Damn, I feel like a .... cold shower? It's been twenty five years since the release of SHANIA TWAIN's 'Come On Over', the top selling album of all time by a woman.
Flourishing genius TYLER THE CREATOR revisits his latest career re-defining album with 'Call Me If You Get Lost: The Estate Sale', which expands to three LPs on blue vinyl, with 8 bonus tracks and a 28 page booklet. LIL UZI VERT's cloud rap banger 'Luv Is Rage 2' turns five years old with a new edition. Houston DIY rhymer FAT TONY's latest opus is 'I Will Make A Baby In This Damn Economy', and we've got an anniversary edition of Bad Boy affiliate FAITH EVANS' classic 'Keep The Faith'.
With Daft Punk seemingly on ice in perpetuity, its big news to hear about a new solo album from one half of that duo, THOMAS BANGALTER. But hold on, before you call your drug dealer, you should know that 'Mythologies' is a piece for orchestra. Completely reinventing his approach to songwriting, Bangalter steps up to classical dance choreography, drawing on his penchant for large-scale, lyrically moving pieces in a whole new way. Super deluxe clamshell packaging on this one makes for quite a treat, as well. JIM O'ROURKE's 2001 album 'Insignificance' is a singular gem in his discography, his most rocking affair by far, and long out of print until this week. It's been ten years since midwestern ambient mystery man HUERCO S. first made the scene with 'Colonial Patterns', his debut for the Software label. A decade on, this collection of drifting, borderless tunes is all the more compelling for its ingraspability, like a school of fish you can see but not touch. Another long-gone gem from 2010 is back, the classic EMERALDS album 'Does It Look Like I'm Here?' is reprinted on ectoplasm color vinyl. The Ohio ambient trio's Ash Ra Tempel worship was at its highest potency on this one.
Technical hardcore legends DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN visit their earliest forays, with limited color reissues of their first three albums, 'Calculating Infinity', 'Miss Machine' and 'Ire Works', and we've got a 30th anniversary reissue of the MUDHONEY classic 'Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge'.
