New This Week At The Shop

This week brings us long awaited albums from favorite names. HOZIER releases his third record, "Unreal Unearth" seamlessly blending soulful melodies, introspective lyrics, and hauntingly beautiful arrangements. RHIANNON GIDDENS offers bluesy, racy, playful tracks on “You’re the One,” her first full album of her own songs. Longtime friends MR. GREG & CASS McCOMBS join forces with a set of new songs that attempt to cover the entire Folkways kids’ curriculum in one go: civil rights, flora and fauna, language, conservation, self-image. "Sing & Play New Folk Songs for Children" honors the Smithsonian Folkways past while skillfully offering something entirely fresh. GREGORY ALAN ISAKOV's brings us yet another masterfully organic, folky, small lo-fi rock ’n’ roll record with "Appaloosa Bones."
TALKING HEADS "Stop Making Sense" gets the deluxe 2LP treatment this week with unreleased tracks and photos. Recorded in New York after 9/11 in front of a small audience, Espíritu Vivo marries SUSANA BACA's wonderful vocals and Peruvian backing band with the downtown sounds of John Medeski and guitarist Marc Ribot. This is the 20th anniversary edition, on vinyl for the very first time. Also twenty years since its original release, Ninja Tune reissues the critically acclaimed ‘Dial ‘M’ for Monkey’, the second studio album by BONOBO. Produced by MARGARET GLASPY with her partner, guitarist/composer Julian Lage, "Echo The Diamond" expands on the frenetic vitality of her widely acclaimed debut Emotions and Math.
TALLEST MAN ON EARTH drops a new album of covers of songs popularized by Bon Iver, Lucinda Williams, Yo La Tengo, the National, Hank Williams and others. "Epoch" is five LPs, four CDs, dozens of unheard recordings and unseen photos and tells the story of DeYARMOND EDISON: Brad Cook, Phil Cook, Justin Vernon and Joe Westerlund before these four friends became two revelatory other bands (Bon Iver, Megafaun). "Take a Look Inside" the debut album by FOLK IMPLOSION (Lou Barlow and John Davis) gets a very limited clear vinyl repress this week. SoCal cosmic folk band MAPACHE deliver their fourth album in four years with "Swinging Stars." Recorded in just one week at an artist retreat, this album shows Sam Blasucci and Clay Finch at their most cohesive.
Rapper JACK HARLOW brings us a 24-minute burst of mixtape-style energy with "Jackman." "Vaudeville Villain" the third studio album by MF Doom, released in 2003 under the pseudonym of VIKTOR VAUGHN gets a silver vinyl pressing this week. FIDDLEHEAD's third album "Death is Nothing to Us" drops on neon orange vinyl. DIPLO turns his attention to house music on his first solo full-length in 18 years.
THAD JONES' first album for Blue Note from 1956 stands as a fantastic sounding announcement that the Detroit native had landed in New York. The stellar line up features Kenny Burrell on guitar, Tommy Flanagan on piano and Billy Mitchell on saxophone. JON BATISTE returns this week with his most most commercial project yet - filled with guest stars like Lana Del Rey, Lil Wayne and the K-pop girl group NewJeans "World Music Radio" is filled with tightly woven hooks that just might fit on a top 40 style playlist. Blue Note reissues two favorites this week CECIL TAYLOR's "Unit Structures" and ANTHONY WILLIAMS "Spring."
