New This Week At The Shop

The Hip Hop 50 celebration continues this week with some fantastic selections back in print from across the history of the constantly evolving genre. FREDDIE GIBBS' Teddy Pendergrass/Tony Montana blend-up 'Freddie' is back for the first time in five years. Trailblazers DE LA SOUL see their catalog continue to reanimate, with new pressings of their century-turning cosmic funk-rap opusi 'Mosaic Thump' and 'Bionix'. GRANDMASTER FLASH set the bar for narrative strength with 'The Message', back in print on "Bronx ice" color wax. Newark underground legends TAME ONE & PARALLEL THOUGHT's late 00s classic 'Da Ol' Jersey Bastard' returns, alongside the equally booming 'Money, Power + Respect' by Yonkers rap supergroup THE LOX.
Always one to say exactly what's on his mind, BONNIE PRINCE BILLY returns to the foreground with a new album of bomb-grade Kentucky realness called 'Keeping Secrets Will Destroy You', with an expanded stable as his backing band. Baltimore channeler WHEATIE MATTIASICH has re-pressed her fantastic debut album 'Old Glow', where we hear her interpret the same Nico and Karen Dalton influences as fellow Charm City crooner Victoria Legrand, over beds of hypnotic guitar. Speaking of which, TY SEGALL & EMMETT KELLY prove they can put you in a trance anywhere, even a tiny clothing store on 'Live At Worship'. The eternally-bootlegged "lost" NEIL YOUNG album from 1977 'Chrome Dreams' gets its first ever official release from the big man himself, including two previously unreleased takes and some great liners. A new JERRY GARCIA comp called 'Might As Well: A Round Records Retrospective' collects 16 of his fan-favorite solo album recordings, DAVID BOWIE's 'Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars: The Motion Picture' release gets a significantly-expanded 50th anniversary release.
UK dance duo JUNGLE explodes with 'Volcano' on limited orange splatter wax, and the unbelievable run of recent new SAULT records continues to tumble our way with the Maggot Brain-styled 'Today and Tomorrow'. Downtempo duo FILA BRAZILLIA have reconvened at random since the early 1990s, always serving up tunes for the brain and feet alike, and they really deliver both on 'Subtle Body'. DAVID BYRNE & FATBOY SLIM exceeded all expectations with their musical 'Here Lies Love', featuring a hall of fame of female vocalists. Big electronic records from RUFUS DU SOL ("Atlas") and SON LUX "Alternate Forms" get limited color vinyl reissues.
The KHRUANGBIN and Friends live release series continues; jeez, is there anyone they don't know? This time around its the Quebecois indie pop juggernaut MEN I TRUST with 'Live at RBC Echo Beach'. The Numero Group takes us back to Wigan with ECCENTRIC NORTHERN SOUL, another in their series of can't miss comps. Nigerian rapper BURNA BOY's 2020 album 'Twice As Tall' is back in print, alongside reissues of LUPE FIASCO's 'Food + Liquor', DON TOLIVER's 'Heaven Or Hell', and JOHN LEGEND's 'Love In The Future'.
The Balmat label has quickly become a must-peep outpost for emerging ambient artists, and this week they introduce us to Malaga, Spain's YLIA, with the enchantingly chuggy 'Ame Agaru'. Modular master CATERINA BARBIERI returns with 'Myuthafoo', some of her most unusually compelling melodies with welcome recalls of Spiegel and Schulze. Ukrainian abstract folk artist SVITLANA NIANIO released some breathtaking tape-only releases in the late 90s, one of which 'Lisova Kolekciya', gets a repress this week. List-topping furniture music is back in stock with a new print of HIROSHI YOSHIMURA's 'Green'. BILL ORCUTT's splintered approach to the guitar has never had more oomph than on 'Jump On It', plus we've got a great new record of chilled vistas from HELIOS; his latest 'Espera' is giving big Ulrich Schnauss vibes.
If you had to pick a single record from Texas indie legends BEDHEAD, it would be their 1994 sun-blasted slowcore masterpiece 'WhatFunLifeWas', given an overdue repress this week. Australian band HYDROPLANE spun off from cult faves The Cats Miaow, releasing some elusive singles of Broadcast-ian pop hauntology comped now by Efficient Space. Hazy garage-gaze gem 'No Regerts' by CHASTITY BELT turns ten with a new color vinyl press, and we've got a trio of classics back in print from 90s shoegaze stunners LUSH: 'Spooky, 'Lovelife' and 'Split' are all here and all clear.
Been too long since we took a trip with AFRICAN HEAD CHARGE, the decades-running emissaries to the dubby outerverse helmed by Adrian Sherwood. Shout out to longtime store pal Luke B on the reminder about 'A Trip To Bolgatanga', in stock on glow in the dark wax. The freaky white boys in GENERAL STRIKE (Steve Beresford & David Toop, along with the Flying Lizards' David Cunningham on the boards) made one of the greatest experimental dub records ever in 1984's 'Danger In Paradise', available only as a cassette until recently. JOHNNY HAMMOND's flip-fantastic organ funk gem 'Gears' gets a Jazz Dispensary reissue, and we've got an incredible new one from Chicago vibraphonist JASON ADASIEWICZ, who puts together a cooking crew featuring Josh Abrams and Hamid Drake on 'Roy's World'. Modern-day afrobeat singer IMMY OWUSU draws very-appropriate comparisons to Sixto Rodriguez (RIP) on 'Lo-Life!', and Awesome Tapes delivers a blazing set from Cameroonian bikutsi king GIBRALTAR DRAKUS on 'Hommage A Zanzibar'.
