New This Week At The Shop

As we near the midpoint of summer, we have a shorter but very much sweeter rundown of new releases this week. We were joined by a nice crowd of you to have an early listen to the latest record from Mitten rockers GRETA VAN FLEET on Wednesday. Safe to say there was universal approval in the air for 'Starcatcher', the group's most dynamic and gigantic-sounding record yet. We have a clear vinyl version, and limited copies of an indie exclusive white and glitter vinyl pressing of this one. Canadian bluegrass modernist BELLA WHITE delivers her second album 'Among Other Things' on limited carnelian colored vinyl. She's paired up with producer Jonathan Wilson on this one, the mixer who's lent a modern country patina to recent records from Angel Olsen, Margo Price, and Papa Doc Misty. Not to be outdone is the more traditional folk player MOLLY TUTTLE, who continues her righteous tear with 'City of Gold', a new album produced alongside Jerry Douglas. Tuttle is one of the new Tennessee players pairing exemplary traditional skills with a progressive, cosmic searcher style. Eternal homespun rocker JOHN MELLENCAMP continues to redefine himself far into his career with 'Orpheus Descending', finally in stock on vinyl this week.
Have you heard about the new BARBIE movie? I'm guessing yes. We aren't exactly a movie theatre here at Strictly Discs, but the pink phenomenon has still reached us via 'Barbie The Album', the soundtrack companion for the film which features a rather astounding roster of relevant pop artists across the spectrum, penning original material in honor of the plastic princess. If we needed to mention it, yes the vinyl is pink on this one. In a stroke of timing and luck, we have finally sourced copies of one of the modern era's great deconstructionist pop albums, 'Oil Of Every Pearl's Un-Insides' from the one and only SOPHIE. Her tragic passing makes this uncategorizable record a lasting document of an artist who was in the process of remaking the world. With a low-key, semi-anonymous intensity, the producer CLARK has been making some of the coolest electro-pop around for many years now; his latest is the amusingly named 'Sus Dog', it features Thom Yorke and Anika guesting on vox, and it rules. The TRESOR label has been setting the bar for club-clattering techno for decades; a generous new three-LP comp from them called 'yet' introduces over a dozen relatively unheard new producers doing some super refreshing new takes on the style.
Near the horizon of some parallel universe crossroads of Rolling Stone magazine and Unsolved Mysteries stands the figure of JIM SULLIVAN, the musician who cut a pitch-perfect country-funk masterpiece with the Wrecking Crew called 'U.F.O' and then dipped out into the New Mexico desert, never to be seen again. It's been over a decade since Light in the Attic first illuminated this 1969 rarity, and its finally back in stock this week. There's no greater lost album out there, I put that on Robert Stack. We've also got a cool one from an Aussie prog-rock band called FRATERNITY, the '72 slab 'Flaming Galah' won the ear of AC/DC's manager, who hit up vocalist Bon Scott to become the future powerhouse's lead singer. We have a lovely new edition of LES RALLIZES DENUDES early 70s recording 'Mizutani', which captures some tender, melancholy loner-psych in the band's initial university period. We've been blessed with a bunch of nice BRIAN ENO classics coming back in stock lately. This week we have the pop auteur's finest vocal record ever, the meticulous and pre-everything 'Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)'.
The Sacred Bones label re-introduced the world to MORT GARSON with the reissue of 'Plantasia' several years back, and they bring the Moog wizard into even brighter focus with 'Journey To The Moon & Beyond', a deep collection of his commissions for TV and radio, and his infamous Apollo 11 moon landing recording, thought for many decades to be lost media. ORNETTE COLEMAN's earth-shaking 1958 debut 'Something Else!!!' gets an audiophile repress this week, plus we've got a new edition of the ambient masterpiece 'Music For Nine Post Cards' by HIROSHI YOSHIMURA, and a lovely disc of krautrock synth-drift from TAROTPLANE called 'The Feedback Sutras'.
Britpop institution BLUR re-invent themselves again with the reunion album 'The Ballad of Darren', in stock on blue wax. DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE celebrate the 20th anniversary of their career-defining gem 'Transatlanticism' with a touched-up new edition, plus we've got long-overdue reissues from a pair of Chicago bands that turned metal into a kind of seismic riffmosphere: RUSSIAN CIRCLES's 'Station' on blue and PELICAN's 'The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw' on gold.
A nice pair of late 70's classics from TATSURO YAMASHITA capture the magic moment when elite Japanese musicians began forging jazz and funk together in an exciting new style that would come to be known as "City Pop". As always, the Japan-only pressings of 'Moonglow' and 'Go Ahead!' are on the pricy side, but you can count on them sounding better than nearly any other record on your shelf. Last up, we got a pair of classics in stock from the Mello Music Group. ODDISEE's nimble-lipped banger 'The Iceberg' is back in print, and we've got a very striking new one from producer APOLLO BROWN & righteous rapper STALLEY called 'Blacklight' fittingly in on neon purple wax.
