New This Week At The Shop
Everyone at the shop has their own preferences, but its safe to say we all love PJ HARVEY. The multi-talented songwriter has created a massively impactful body of work that's even more impressive when you realize her latest, 'I Inside the Old Year Dying', is only the tenth studio album of her career. Polly Jean makes it count this go-round, diving deep into a world she's begun to describe with a book of epic poetry published last year. Her sound is as grungey and graceful as ever here. The merry massive of KING GIZZARD pop their heads up again with 'PetroDragonic Apocalypse', which has an even longer title you can look up yourself, and comes on lucky rainbow color wax. Forget everything you know about TAYLOR SWIFT's 'Speak Now', (I'll wait), because Taylor's Version has arrived, in a lush orchid marbled 3LP edition. Our copies of this much-anticipated release arrive Friday morning (as in...they are not here yet) and if you would like to take extra care in reserving one, you should do so online. ANOHNI & THE JOHNSONS return with another powerful mission of redemption with 'My Back Was A Bridge For You To Cross', its cover features a lovely portrait of gay rights activist Marsha P. Johnson. Its been quite some time since we had new records from LOCAL NATIVES and GROUPLOVE; this week we get both!
A banner week for those in search of crisp, audiophile-grade editions of jazz classics. The BILL EVANS TRIO desert-islander 'Waltz For Debby' gets a definitive edition, while the Blue Note Tone Poet series delivers a pair of doozies: HANK MOBLEY's a 'A Caddy For Daddy' and the SONNY CLARK TRIO's 1958 scorcher, with Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. The new BLUE NOTE RE:IMAGINED II compilation turns our ears on to some fresh UK names. Unclassifiable jazz-folkie MIKE COOPER's seriously overlooked 1974 album 'Life and Death in Paradise' gets a reissue from Paradise of Bachelors, coupled with a more recent live recording. ANDRE GIBSON fronted the Chicago soul group Universal Togetherness Band, and now Numero rustles up 'Apart: Demos 1980-1984', a hushed and tender affair that conjures a similar magic as the Charles Stepney comp did last year.
APOLLO BROWN & PHILMORE GREENE deliver some fresh Chitown rapware on 'Cost of Living'; its been ten years since QUASIMOTO dropped the lowkey genius of 'Yessir Whatever' and it is accordingly back in print; NICKI MINAJ's 'Queen Radio: Volume 1' lives on a luxurious new 3LP set; reissues of long out of print classics are in from THE DOGG POUND ('Cali Iz Active'), THE GAME's debut, and SEAN PAUL's globally-played 'Dutty Rock'.
Lots of fun from the dance world this week! GUS DAPPERTON does deeply moody house pop on 'Henge'; LITTLE DRAGON returns with 'Slugs Of Love' on blue/orange wax, reminding us that nobody does their sultry groove better; fresh-faced tech-house is in from LAURENCE GUY on 'Living Like There's No Tomorrow But Killing Yourself In The Process', which is certainly one way to go about it. When it comes to brainy, beaty, heavily padded nu-disco, it seems like Norwegians Do It Better, and a pair of them check in this week with absolute heaters: FREDFADES opens some 'Caviar' while LINDSTROM declares that 'Everyone Else is a Stranger'. Feeling himself because (apparently) you can't, SKRILLEX checks in with 'Don't Get Too Close'.
WHAM collects their massive trove of singles on 'Echoes From The Edge Of Heaven'. GAL COSTA's intoxicatingly irreverent, culture-shifting bossa masterpiece 'India' turns 50 with a new edition. ALEJANDRO JODOROWSKY's legendary 'El Topo' sees its psychedelic score come back in print, plus we've got new, cheap editions of some timeless LPs from JACKSON BROWNE, PHIL COLLINS, and INXS.
