New This Week At The Shop

So much for the slow season of Summer; this week's crop of new records is as overflowing as ever. Your newsletter writer has a bit of a bum arm, so forgive this quick and to-the-point rundown. The BILLIE HOLIDAY classic 'Songs For Distingue Lovers', a 1958 collection of standards that hasn't had a decent pressing in decades gets the Verve/Acoustic Sounds treatment. 'Old and New Dreams', the historic organic jazz summit of DON CHERRY, DEWEY REDMAN, CHARLIE HADEN and ED BLACKWELL is restored on the ECM Luminescence series alongside the well oiled funk fusion of GARY BURTON's 'The New Quartet', which featured the vibesman with a band of unknown newcomers; the bluesy, nocturnal Detroit jazz classic 'Saturday Night Special' from LYMAN WOODARD gets a limited re-issue; the soothing, yearning piano sounds of MAL WALDRON's 'The Quest' is back in print, sporting one of Eric DolphyĎs finest sessions; and we have the latest trio album from JOE LOVANO.
Fans of esoteric guitar-based indie rock have plenty to pick from this week. After the band Duster closed up shop at the end of the century, songwriter Clay Parton made some absolutely brilliant homebrewed pop under the convoluted acronym EIAFUAWN, which traveled thru the Dusterverse via CD-rs and Soulseek. Numero rescues these recordings, many of which sound like sunnier versions of his old band's songs, on 'Birds in the Ground'. Soft-spoken Chicago folk-rock hitmen Douglas McCombs, Charles Rumback, and Bill MacKay unite as BLACK DUCK for a new record on Thrill Jockey. Wednesday guitarist MJ LENDERMAN sees his debut solo cassette 'Ghost of Your Guitar Solo' get a vinyl release; lofi brilliance all over on this modest gem, giving big Mountain Goats, Sebadoh, and early Modest Mouse vibes. Underrated Indiana post-rockers ATIVIN†break a 19-year hiatus with 'Austere', now with Chris Brokaw from Come on drums; UK indie-pop heroes HEAVENLY reissue their '92 masterpiece†'Le Jardin De Heavenly'; and its been 40 years of THE DREAM SYNDICATE's groundbreaking indie-psych gem 'The Days of Wine and Roses', expanded this week as a double LP.
Five years past their last wildly successful album, Alaska's PORTUGAL THE MAN return with 'Chris Black Changed My Life', dedicated to their late dear friend. Not to be confused with Goose, New York rockers GEESE land hard with a blazing new record of high-energy garage, '3D Country'. Beloved indie balladeers WYE OAK collect singles and ephemera on 'Every Day Like the Last'. KEHLANI's debut mixtape 'Cloud 19' finally gets a legitimate vinyl release; UK actress and songwriter MAISIE PETERS returns with 'The Good Witch' and we have a new vinyl pressing of JENNIFER LOPEZ' triple-platinum 'On The 6'.
15 years since it kicked off an American indie-folk revival, the AVETT BROTHERS 'Emotionalism' gets a new limited color vinyl release. 'The Great Divide', WILLIE NELSON's 2002 duets album featuring friends like Sheryl Crow and Lee Ann Womack lands on vinyl for the first time. Willie's sister BOBBIE NELSON partners up with AMANDA SHIRES for a new album of covers called 'Loving You'. Fire breathing country rocker LYDIA LOVELESS sees her 2020 album, 'Daughter' back in print on vinyl, and we have new albums from M.WARD and the Korean American folk singer NAT MYERS.
The world lost a transcendent talent with RYUICHI SAKAMOTO's passing earlier this year. We have one more studio album from the master, recorded during the final years of Sakamoto's life, during which he had withdrawn from the public but continued to compose prolifically. '12' is an expansive collection of ambient pieces for piano and synth, dotted with microscopic details that reward a close listen. Swedish multi instrumentalist ERIK SANDQVIST continues the tradition of Bo Hansson with a very enjoyable record of grooving instrumentals called 'Bingo i Iokalen'. Hallucinogenic soundscaper GRAHAM LAMBKIN is back with 'Aphorisms', his first solo record in several years. 'La Voz', the debut solo album from leading salsa vocalist HECTOR LAVOE is back in print this week, alongside a 50th anniversary pressing of FELA KUTI's 'Gentleman' and a new pressing of JANIS JOPLIN & JORMA KAUKONEN's 'The Legendary Typewriter Tape', if you missed it on Black Friday last year.
West Coast post-hardcore ragers MILITARIE GUN deliver grit and hooks on 'Life Under the Gun', Southern Lord deals us a live album from the sorely missed POWER TRIP, hardcore classic 'The Age Of Quarrel' by the CRO-MAGS†gets a fresh pressing, and we've got a new LP from THE HEAVY, plus a pair of KING GIZZARD live albums capturing the boys at Red Rocks, performing 'Murder of the Universe' and 'Infest the Rats Nest'.
