New This Week At The Shop
Big week! Lots of changes around the shop have kept us very busy so, short and sweet newsletter this week! Vocal pop darlings LAKE STREET DIVE revisit their first album with an expanded version of 'Fun Machine: The Sequel' in on tangerine vinyl. GLASS ANIMALS' 2016 sophomore album 'How To Be A Human Being' is back in print for the first time in years. IMAGINE DRAGONS's latest, 'Mercury Act 2' is now in stock on vinyl, and we've got a limited 10 year anniversary edition of ALABAMA SHAKES' now-classic debut, 'Boys & Girls'.
'Windflower' is the exceedingly chill, extremely rare guitar duo album of HERB ELLIS and REMO PALMIER, plucked from obscurity by the all-knowing Youtube algorithm and now reissued for the first time. DONALD BYRD summons an absolutely incandescent band for the live album 'Cookin' With Blue Note at Montreux', getting a reissue this week. 'High Jazz' is one of the most coveted sets from the MADLIB Medicine Show series; an electrified set of covers and re-interpretations of deep jazz heat by the Yesterdays New Quintet ensemble, now back in print on seaglass blue wax. A new performance of the STEVE REICH works 'Runner' and 'Music for Ensemble & Orchestra' is in from Finnish conductor Susanna Malkki.
The timeless ETTA JAMES shack-shaker 'Tell Mama' gets a fresh press on opaque yellow vinyl via the Bear Family label. Boogie boss JOHN LEE HOOKER's 1989 classic 'The Healer' is back in print, with guests like Santana, Robert Cray, and Canned Heat. The Colemine label revisits an early heater from their catalog with instrumental organ trio THE JIVE TURKEYS' album 'Bread & Butter', back in print on, and I quote, gravy brown colored vinyl. Years after their appearance in the Blue Valentine soundtrack put them on every mixtape around for several years, we hear some more enchanting gospel soul from PENNY & THE QUARTERS on '...And Friends', on smoke vinyl via the Numero Group.
One of the year's best-selling country albums is ZACH BRYAN's 'American Heartbreak', and it finally sees an LP edition just in time for the holidays. Folkie friends SHOVELS AND ROPE look back to their debut album 'O Be Joyful' on its 10 year anniversary. Beloved rock songwriter NEAL CASAL's long out of print 'Rain, Wind and Speed' gets its first-ever US pressing on vinyl, and we've got a new edition of MY MORNING JACKET's 'Circuital' on deluxe tri-color 3LP.
A pair of impeccable early albums from BAUHAUS are back in stock this week; 'The Sky's Gone Out' and 'Burning From The Inside'. An expanded edition of POLVO's debut double single gets its first LP pressing, and we've got a super cool LP collection of unheard late 90s material from Cocteau Twins' key songwriter SIMON RAYMONDE.
Five years is long enough for a fresh edition of the IDLES breakout hit 'Brutalism'; its got a new cover and limited red wax. Swedish doom metal vets CANDLEMASS return with 'Sweet Evil Sun', drawing critical raves. Often incarcerated, never imitated, we've got a fresh printing of PUSCIFER's 'Conditions Of My Parole' in the building, plus a 10 year anniversary edition of the self-titled record from ANYWHERE, the artrock supergroup featuring Cedric from At the Drive In, Mike Watt, and others.
JIM O'ROURKE. You either love him, or you just haven't heard the right record yet. If you've never treated your ears to 'Bad Timing', his 1997 Fahey, Conrad and Ives-channeling guitar-concrete masterpiece, you may do so now via its first reprinting in many years. This is pure speculation, but I've always assumed this was the record that convinced Wilco to bring him into the studio for their fruitful collaboration on 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot'. We've got even more treats from the Drag City label this week: the out of print EIKO ISHIBASHI gem 'The Dream My Bones Dream', a compilation of Bay Area DIY noise/punk on the FOLDING CASSETTES collection, and a fresh printing of the ecstatic drone album 'Automaginary' by the super-sized big band of BITCHIN BAJAS & NATURAL INFORMATION SOCIETY.
R&B queen MARY J. BLIGE's latest album 'Good Morning, Gorgeous' finally gets a vinyl edition. ERYKAH BADU's 2010 gem 'New Amerykah Part Two' is back in print on purple vinyl. Ageless crooner BABYFACE enlists an all-star cast of contemporary vocalists (Ella Mai, Ari Lennox, Kehlani, and more) for 'Girls Night Out', and ALICIA KEYS blesses us with a brand new holiday album called 'Santa Baby', a concept record about an newborn child tasked with delivering presents to everyone on the planet.
