New This Week At The Shop
The highest vistas of the shoegaze sound may have originated between Dublin and Oxford, but most folks don't know that the opposite pole - the deepest, most-obscure underside of the shoegaze iceberg - is right here in the upper midwest! Enough melodic, fuzz-flinging spacerock bands populated the state of Michigan in the 90s to fill an entire 2LP compilation from Third Man a few years back, and the label now returns with SOUTHEAST OF SATURN II, expanding the ken to surrounding sonic tundras like Minnesota, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin, with incredible results. Most of the songs here come from bands that only mustered one EP or comp track and may never have eclipsed their humble regional environs, which only makes the power of the tracks as they sound here in 2022 all the more impressive, gleaming like diamonds in a snowy rough. Our vinyl editions are the sparkling "Full Moon and Great Lake" colored indie exclusive. For many true BEACH BOYS connoisseurs, the band's songwriting reached its ultimate form on their early 70s Carl Wilson-produced country pop gems 'Carl & The Passions' and 'Holland'. These two classics are united on a new remastered set called 'Sail On Sailor', in a 2-LP set with a bonus 45, and in a significantly expanded 5LP box set. New York bassist DEZRON DOUGLAS first landed on our radar with his wonderful early-covid collab with harpist Brandee Younger, and now backs up everyone from Pharaoh Sanders to Trey Anastasio. His latest album 'ATALAYA' is quite the decisive statement; spiritual jazz thats explosive, then serene, by turns, with lots of great guests. Within week's of releasing 'Homework', DAFT PUNK had some of the brightest minds in the dance world lining up to remix tracks like "Around The World", "Burnin'", and "Revolution 909", now collected on a new set.
We've been fielding requests for the latest album from the irascible, irrepressible BLACK COUNTRY, NEW ROAD all year long, and we've finally got a repress of 'Ants From Up There', a cathartic tumble through jazzy emo. Dutch-Croatian sleepless dream-popper EERIE WANDA is back with her best yet on 'Internal Radio'. Canadian melodic punkers WHITE LUNG bring their first new material in five years with 'Premonition', on indie orange wax, and we've got the latest LP release from the Bowie/T-Swift blending KING PRINCESS.
The Tone Poet reissues continue this week with a delightful and rare session from CHET BAKER and ART PEPPER, 'Picture Of Heath', and BLUE MITCHELL's electrifying 'Bring It Home To Me'. ALI SHAHEED MUHAMMAD and ADRIAN YOUNGE keep their Jazz is Dead sessions blazing upstate with a new collection of songs recorded with a number of their featured guests such as Jean Carn, Tony Allen and Phil Ranelin, plus a new LP of collab tracks with the incredible LA collective KATALYST.
With a simple, un-annotated mix for cult-fave blog/label Blowing Up The Workshop back in 2012, an unknown Cleveland DJ named GALCHER LUSTWERK wrote the playbook for underground dance music in the twenty-teens. '100% Galcher' was a startling gasp of fresh air; a driving set of Robert Hood-influenced motorik funk cut with vaporous ambient interludes and no-bull po-faced vocals. For many years, you could bookmark this mix in your browser, but you could not play any of it's killer tracks on wax; Ghostly rights that wrong with a lovely 2LP edition on grey vinyl. German techno-pop sculptor F.S. BLUMM pairs up with composer NILS FRAHM on the refreshingly rhythm-heavy session '2x1=4'; Quito folk-tronic producer NICOLA CRUZ is tapped for a banger set of modern minimal, and we've got a reissue of the haunting, Twin Peaks-like 80s ambient LP 'The Body Is A Message of the Universe' by SHIHO YABUKI.
Oh hey, sorry.. probably should have warned you that this is the "R" rated section of the newsletter, so any minors reading this need to go find a grownup. Decadent dream-poppers CIGARETTES AFTER SEX reissue their sparkling self-titled debut on limited clear/white vinyl this week. Numero kicks off their celebration of the mostly-unsung heroes of early emo, Annapolis, Maryland's THE HATED with a bang on 'Best Piece of Shit, Vol. 4', a significantly expanded edition of their debut 1985 cassette. The Hated drew inspiration from Husker Du, Rites of Spring, and their own suburban boredom, adding edges of chaotic, unfiltered sincerity that made them mythical heroes to fans of emotional hardcore, despite having their entirety of their discography out of print since the late 80s. Canadian post-hardcore lords FUCKED UP really changed the style up for their 2006 epic 'Hidden World', back in print now on magenta vinyl, and well, what is there to be said about noise rock legends UNSANE's 1991 Matador debut that isn't said by its revolting cover? A fresh remaster "cleans up" this classic as much as possible.
Guatelaman cellist MABE FRATTI hits a new height in her young career with 'Se Ve Desde Aqui', a wonderful experience of electro-acoustic experimental pop that sounds of a piece with recent records from Lucrecia Dalt and Jenny Hval. Brooklyn girl-group HABIBI see their timeless 2013 psych-pop debut rescued from oblivion with a red vinyl deluxe edition on Kill Rock Stars. Former Priests frontwoman KATIE ALICE GREER steps out with a new solo album called 'Barbarism', and we've got the latest LP, 'Trinity', from perpetual line-stepper EARTHEATER.
Majestic folk rockers THE STAVES welcome a tenth anniversary edition of their classic, 'Dead + Born + Grown'. JERRY GARCIA's 1971 solo debut 'Garcia' celebrates a 50th Anniversary with a new gold nugget colored edition, plus we've got a pair of absolute heaters from 70s Brazil: the Sabbath-inbibing 'Nao Fale com Paredes' by MODULO 1000, and OS NOVOS BAIANOS samba-pop symphony 'Acabou Chorare'.
Last up, fresh emissaries from KING GIZZARD himself! 'Float Along - Fill Your Lungs', 'Flying Microtonal Banana', and 'Papier Mache Dream Balloon' all get fresh color editions with new artwork this week.
