The Duluth modern bluegrass unit TRAMPLED BY TURTLES has honed their angelic Americana across two decades of consistently great albums and frequent gigs around the upper midwest. For their tenth album 'Alpenglow', TBT turn to a master of the form in Jeffrey Scot Tweedy, who welcomed the sextet to his Chicago loft studio to gently hammer out one of their best efforts yet, in the shop on limited clear vinyl with a bonus 7". Master songcrafter REGINA SPEKTOR surprised her dedicated fanbase with the release of a spectacular new album this year, the cathartic and soaring 'Home, Before And After', and we finally get that vinyl release for it this week in a ruby red vinyl edition. There may not be a universally-held "best" album by THE BEATLES, but everyone agrees that the creative explosion that augured their lasting cultural impact began with 1966's 'Revolver', a wide-eyed romp through genre-dabbling psychedelic pop balladry. George Martin's son Giles turns his 21st century eye/ear control to this eternal classic with a new remaster, and we have expanded editions galore, including 2CD, 5CD and 4LP box sets, plus a limited edition of the remastered LP that comes with a luxurious tote bag featuring Klaus Voormann's iconic cover art. You will be absolutely slaying it at the farmer's market with this thing. As we honor the ninth anniversary of his passing, we bring in a fresh (and limited) edition of LOU REED's street punk/avant-garde masterpiece 'Transformer' on white vinyl, joining his illuminating collection of early demos, still available from last week!
Compton rapper VINCE STAPLES treads away from the bright-lit bangers of his early records for confrontational/confessional g-funk flows on his 2021 self-titled album, now out on vinyl for the first time. R&B songwriter KEHLANI continues to evolve their alluringly real sound on the brilliantly bubbly and unfiltered 'blue water road'. FUTURE's latest disc 'I Never Liked You' is finally here on wax, and we've got a limited pink vinyl edition of 'Magic', the legendary NAS' refreshing return to form.
Shape-shifting singer-songwriter FAYE WEBSTER goes old school on us with a new record called 'Car Therapy Sessions', which finds her and producer Trey Pollard (Foxygen) leading a 24 piece orchestra through lush renditions of tunes from her last two albums. Not sure how a band named DRUGDEALER manages to go on tour without at least a bit of hassle, but it's done nothing to dim the shining hopefulness of the LA unit's placidly funky soft-rock soundscape. 'Hiding In Plain Sight' is the most adventurous and polished album yet from them, and they've all been very good! We have this one in on "table wine rouge" colored vinyl, and I have good word that they're playing the UW Union in a few weeks, where I'm sure album opener "Madison" will go down rather memorably. NYC hardcore secret-keepers SHOW ME THE BODY let a big one rip with the tricky, scalding 'Trouble The Water', while Canadian post-punk veterans PREOCCUPATIONS return with an album that carries their trademark leaden tension alongside a refreshing melodicism reminiscent of Eno's 'Before And After Science' or early Cure.
When the foundational DJ and producer THEO PARRISH got the call to turn in a mix for the long-running 'DJ-Kicks' series, he decided - in true Detroit fashion - to do things his way. Typically a session where a selector flexes their deepest cuts amongst new promo material, Theo puts the whole city on with 'Detroit Forward', a selection of entirely exclusive tracks from up-and-coming producers in the D like De'Sean Jones, Meftah, Specter and Whodat. If you can think of a better way to get familiar with the latest generation from a city that has defined and consistently expanded dance music, I'm all ears. The HERMANOS GUTIERREZ are Swiss-Ecuadorian brothers who, per their bio, didn't even mean to start a band when they began playing together just a few years ago. This spontaneity comes through on 'El Bueno Y El Malo', their lustrous debut for Easy Eye containing ten western landscapes inspired by Morricone, Santo & Johnny, and David Lynch. New York psychedelic soul ensemble GHOST FUNK ORCHESTRA return with 'A New Kind Of Love', in on red vinyl, and we've got the latest modern classic pop wizardry from COIN, with 'Uncanny Valley'.
Trumpeter AVISHAI COHEN assembles his standard backing band on 'Naked Truth', said to be the most improvisational album in his catalog. Pianist OLAFUR ARNALDS invited a compelling list of artists to do "reworks" of tracks from his 2020 album 'Some Kind of Peace', and several folks here take his still serenity quite far afield. Tenor legend STANLEY TURRENTINE welcomed organist SHIRLEY SCOTT and the underrated guitarist JIMMY PONDER for the 1968 Blue Note classic 'Common Touch', which gets a lovely reissue this week, alongside a new edition of the Venezuelan latin-jazz rarity 'De Repente' by the VIRGILIO ARMAS TRIO, released in scarce quantities back in 1970.
90s guitar heroism incoming! Ok, DINOSAUR JR's 'Beyond' album technically came out in 2007, but it was a "comeback" of sorts that included original member Lou Barlow, and it compared admirably to their early 90s classics. Its back in print this week in a limited color vinyl run, with its original bonus single included. We've also got the melodic hardcore mastery of RIVAL SCHOOLS debut album 'United By Fate', BUILT TO SPILL's '94 crunchy fall classic 'There's Nothing Wrong With Love' on silver marble wax, and a lovely 30th anniversary vinyl edition of KYUSS's '92 desert rock riffbeast 'Blues For The Red Sun'.
Yowzers, it's been twenty years since Massachusetts collective SUNBURNED HAND OF THE MAN dosed the American underworld with their epic album 'Headdress'! The sprawling unit played a freeform, hypnotic kind of session music more indebted to Sun Ra or the Taj Mahal Travellers than anything in the rock canon, though I sense a little love for Canned Heat on this classic. The group's leader John Moloney was just in town with Dinosaur Jr, and we're glad to say he cleaned up on some really freaky records in the basement. Speaking of collectives, several of the hangdog Montrealers in Godspeed You Black Emperor split off for a single glorious album as SET FIRE TO FLAMES for a 2001 album that's now been reissued for the first time. It is more of a suite of instrumental sketches than the symphonic doom of GYBE, but it packs a similar emotional heft. Siouxsie herself has curated some of the most Samhain-friendly SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES tracks for a new compilation called 'All Souls', and we've got a limited neon green pressing of SEX PISTOLS' 'Never Mind The Bollocks'!
The reissues do not stop. DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE's fan-favorite 'The Photo Album' gets a vinyl reissue in full deluxe regalia, and we have some nice photobooks to give away with it. THE BLACK KEYS' classic 'Thickfreakness' get a pink vinyl press, TOM WAITS' 'Alice' is back, this time on metallic gold vinyl, and we've got the definitive FOO FIGHTERS essentials comp in on LP.
Numero mixes it up once again with BOUND FOR HELL, their extremely ambitious compilation of LA hard rock and hair metal, 'On The Sunset Strip'. QUEEN's debut album 'Queen' gets a proper half-speed remaster, and we have a pair of reissues from INXS at the peak of their power.

Used CD Alert
Surprise! We're bringing back an old SD tradition this week: the used CD alert! The flipbin of 120 (give or take) fresh used CD is back by the front counter, staying refreshed with cool jazz, blues, classic rock, out of print indie, new wave and experimental, and of course, the oddball one of a kind items that don't have a section of their own. Please, have a flip. We insist.
This week we kick it off with a bang: lots of out of print jazz discs from Coltrane, Shepp, Dolphy, Shorter, Ashby, Ornette, Mingus, Pharoah, and the like; hard to find Zappa, Stones, and Dead; a great run of 80s ethereal from Dead Can Dance, Praxis, Eno, Kate Bush, Talk Talk, Harold Budd, etc; Bobby Fuller, Parliament, Dwight Yoakam, Gang Starr, Nina Simone, Screamin Jay Hawkins, and many more!

Black Friday Record Store Day is November 25th
Strictly Discs will be the place to be this Post-Thanksgiving-Shopping-Melee-Day, also known as Black Friday.
And that's because certain indie stores across the country will be the place to get special releases created just for you, for giving and getting this holiday season, and they're scheduled for release on Black Friday, November 25, 2022.
Now, this is not Record Store Day, Jr., but it is brought to you by the powers-that-be at Record Store Day. This is a group of special releases you can only find at certain independent record stores nationwide. The magic of these pieces (many uber-limited) is that every one of them is something someone will really LOVE to get, and you'll really ENJOY giving. And you may have the added nice feeling of supporting a local, independently owned (Strictly Discs, Independently Owned since 1988) business during the holidays.
Here is Strictly Discs' plan for the day:
1. We OPEN at 9AM for RSD shopping
2. Line to form westbound on Monroe Street
3. While in line, you will be handed a menu of all RSD/BF titles
4. We will pull your requests & you will check out outside
5. The shop will open for normal browsing at approximately 10 (when the RSD line is gone)
6. RSD titles will be located upstairs
Thank you for helping us to keep this event safe & fun.
