Strictly Discs

November 24, 2021

BLACK FRIDAY RECORD STORE DAY IS NOVEMBER 26:

Strictly Discs will be the place to be this Post-Thanksgiving-Shopping-Melee-Day, also known as Black Friday.

And that's because certain indie stores across the country will be the place to get special releases created just for you, for giving and getting this holiday season, and they're scheduled for release on Black Friday, November 26, 2021.

Now, this is not Record Store Day, Jr., but it is brought to you by the powers-that-be at Record Store Day. This is a group of special releases you can only find at certain independent record stores nationwide. The magic of these pieces (many uber-limited) is that every one of them is something someone will really LOVE to get, and you'll really ENJOY giving. And you may have the added nice feeling of supporting a local, independently owned (Strictly Discs, Independently Owned since 1988) business during the holidays.

Here is Strictly Discs' plan for the day:

1. We OPEN at 9AM for RSD shopping

2. Line to form westbound on Monroe Street

3. While in line, you will be handed a menu of all RSD titles

4. We will pull your requests & you will check out outside

5. The shop will open for normal browsing at approximately 10 (when the RSD line is gone)

6. RSD titles will be located upstairs

Thank you for helping us to keep this event safe & fun.

PARTY FAVORS:

Courtesy of New Belgium Brewing, each legal-aged customer checking out will receive a bottle and/or a can of beer to take away. A little something to kick the session off.

NEW THIS WEEK AT THE SHOP:

With Black Friday exclusives taking the marquee spot this week, we have just a few regular new releases to let you know about, but they are pretty major in their own way. Off the top, we're elated to finally have vinyl copies of 'Mother', the second album from West London neo soul wonder CLEO SOL. The precise members of the UK collective Sault are not exactly known, but Cleo has turned up on a few of their records. On her own albums (we also have a few copies of her debut in as well) she crafts an enveloping atmosphere of introspection and tribute over top of stirringly groovy production, ala Jill Scott or Erykah Badu. From a little closer to home, at last we have a proper solo debut album from Chicago composer BEN LAMAR GAY, who takes his meditative yet agitated soul-fusion to incredible new places on 'Open Arms To Open Us', an expansive new record with an endless list of contributors like Angel Bat Dawid, Tomeka Reid, and the ladies from Ohmme. Whenever multiple people are credited as playing "things" on an album, you know it's going down. We've only thrown a couple songs on from this one and it's already sounding classic. If you require even more funk, a new EP from EL MICHELS AFFAIR collects odds and ends from the recording sessions for their 2021 bomb 'Yeti'.

Rewind! New Jersey rockers TITUS ANDRONICUS got their Ken Burns on and set the world gently aflame with their breakout album 'The Monitor' back in 2010. This modern classic gets a fresh gatefold vinyl release for its tenth anniversary, with a fresh mastering job. The 20th century drew to a close with the rowdy Scottish group MOGWAI vying for the title of the heaviest of the dynamic post-rock bands of that era. They sealed it with a run of EPs, '4 Satin', 'No Education = No Future' and a mighty '99 release just called 'EP'. These long out of print mini-albums are collected this week on a gorgeous triple vinyl set pressed on three different colors. Benevolent regents KING GIZZARD see their recent live album 'L.W. Live in Australia' get a fresh bootleg press on clear vinyl, with a reverse groove that plays from the center outward. What will they think of next? Please don't answer that.

AUTECHRE fans stand up! The Warp reissue campaign has arrived at the crux of the fearless duo's late 90s ascent into pure form, bringing us painstaking recreations of 'Chiastic Slide' from 1996 and 'LP5' from 1998. The Manchester unit began to enforce a polarity within their fanbase on these endlessly inventive records that introduced elements of chance, error, and collapse into their already hectic program of techno deconstruction that keeps them at the vanguard to this very day. Before his CFCF project delved into headier realms of post-classical grandeur, producer Michael Silver made a corker of a balearic beat record called 'Continent', which gets a fresh clear vinyl pressing over ten years since its release. Jet-puffed chillout perfection here, with the Fleetwood Mac 'Big Love' cover alone justifying a purchase.

Avant-garde bassist DEVIN HOFF enlists friends like Julia Holter, Jim White, and Sharon Van Etten for a lush tribute to under-appreciated songwriter ANNE BRIGGS on 'Voices From the Empty Moor'. Deck and Doom linked up for the first time on 2018's CZARFACE MEETS METAL FACE, which gets a new limited edition repress with black and white cover art and clear vinyl. The NINA SIMONE rarity 'An Intimate Variety of Vocal Charm' gets a stereo remaster on vinyl for the first time since its 1959 release, in the shop on green wax.

What do you get when you combine English eccentric folkie RICHARD DAWSON with the genre-blending Finnish psych-prog-metalmen in CIRCLE? No idea really, and neither will you until you hear their new collaborative album 'Henki'. We stay heavy with nice vinyl represses of classics from EMERSON LAKE AND PALMER and CORROSION OF CONFORMITY. COC's 'No Cross No Crown' comes to us on beer colored wax, which gives me an idea....

USED VINYL ALERT:

Used vinyl alert time! Are you sitting down? Course you are. We carry on the fine tradition of putting out some extra special used vinyl on Black Friday with hands down the best crop of LPs we've seen all year.

We cover all the bases as usual, but this time we go especially deep into the wild world of 1980s alternative, indie, new wave, punk, hardcore, goth and industrial. Original or early pressings here from Joy Division, New Order, Echo and the Bunnymen, Kate Bush, Sisters of Mercy, Nico, the Birthday Party, the Replacements, Husker Du, the Church, the Cult, the Cure, Siouxsie, XTC, Lydia Lunch, Bad Brains, Meat Puppets, the Big Boys, Hollywood Autopsy (!!!), the Butthole Surfers, the Crucifucks, Black Flag, Spacemen 3, Die Kreuzen, Soul Asylum, Lubricated Goat, Nine Inch Nails, Toxic Reasons, Depeche Mode, Circle Jerks, Iggy Pop, the Minutemen, Angry Samoans, the Pop Group, Skinny Puppy, Dead Moon, the Cramps, Soundgarden, Pere Ubu, the Red Krayola, Chrome, Scratch Acid, Psychic TV, REM, the MC5, Ministry, the Sex Pistols, the Specials, and more. I know, I know, it sounds like I'm just naming every band. But they're all here! And no duds! Nearly every record here is an essential, classic piece of that band's discography! So many exclamation points!

The depth continues across the board. We've got rare, collectible, and beloved titles from classic names like David Bowie (lots), the Velvet Underground (the 'Closet Mix'!), Frank Zappa, Harry Nilsson, Pink Floyd, Captain Beefheart, Dr. John, 13th Floor Elevators, Guns and Roses, Soft Machine, Fleetwood Mac, Buddy Holly, the Eagles, Jimi Hendrix, Little Feat, Leonard Cohen, Ozzy and Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan, plus some more wild and woolly oddballs from the Holy Mackerel, the Hot Dogs, Gordon Haskell, the Fugs, Procol Harum, Savoy Brown, Feminine Complex, Kannibal Komix, Bohemian Vendetta, and Ultimate Spinach.

Top tier jazz is in from Lou Donaldson, Herbie Hancock, Sun Ra, Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver, Oliver Nelson, Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis, Horace Silver, Donald Byrd, and Art Blakey. Some stunning, rare blues pressings come from Earl Hooker, Albert King, Freddie King, T Bone Walker, Muddy Waters, John Mayall, Fred McDowell, Charlie Musselwhite, and Lightning Hopkins. Folk gems include several from Shirley Collins, Michael Hurley, and John Fahey.

Experimental and avant-garde biz is in from Moondog, Henry Cow, Cabaret Voltaire, Ilhan Mimaroglu, Annette Peacock, Roedelius, Ruth White, Tony Conrad with Faust, Cluster, and others, plus a lengthy run through just about all of the early discography of Brian Eno. Reggae and dub is here from Linton Kwesi Johnson, Jah Shaka, African Head Charge, and Mikey Dread, plus we've got early dance, groove and hip-hop from Newcleus, Sade, Lords of Acid, Deee-lite, Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC, the Beastie Boys, Eric B and Rakim, and Busta Rhymes.
